A German shepherd named Layka, is one of those military dogs. She’s unbelievably dedicated to her team members, and she’s willing to do absolutely anything for them, including putting herself in harms way to protect them.

This loyalty and love was showcased in a recent battle when her team members were involved in a conflict. In a valiant effort to help subdue an enemy combatant, Layka took four bullets for members of her team.

When the battle was over, Layka had to be rushed to the hospital right away. There, doctors operated on her for 7 long hours. In the end, doctors were able to save her life, but they weren’t able to save her shattered leg.

During recovery, Layka’s military handler developed a strong and loving bond with the dog who had saved his life, and he vowed to do the same for her in return.
