Steve Greig’s beloved dog, Wolfgang, died and he could not help but feel a crushing sadness. That sadness led him to realize that he needed to rescue another dog and offer him a good life.
He went to his local shelter in Denver, Colorado. Greig was not going to rescue just any dog; he decided to adopt the “least adoptable” elderly dog he could find. Because he knows that senior dogs are typically overlooked.
Today, Greig is a human dad to 10 elderly shelter dogs! His Instagram account is full of photos of his pack and has over 478k followers.
Greig wakes every day at 5:00 in the morning to begin making breakfast for his large family. Most of the dogs have very different dietary needs.
His daily schedule includes walks to the park, vet appointments and more important, lots of cuddles and love. “Whenever I sit or lie down at a dog-friendly level, there are always at least three or four of [dogs] attached,” wrote Greig on Instagram.
“They’re just wiser animals,” said Greig. “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age.”
“A month or two went by and I still felt so horrible about it.”
“I decided that the only way I would feel better was if something good happened that probably wouldn’t have happened if he had not died.”
“So [I adopted] a 12-year-old Chihuahua with a heart murmur and four bad knees.”
“And that was just the beginning of all the animals.”
Greig is an incredibly busy human dad to his 10 elderly shelter dogs.
“A normal day for me is getting up at 5 a.m. in the morning and making breakfast for all of them.”
“Which, you know, there’s 10 [dogs] and most of them have different diets.”
And then there are the grooming appointments and trips to the vet.
