Many years ago in the town of Nome, Alaska, a sled dog named Balto, helped save thousands of lives. The town was plagued with diphtheria, making all of the children sick.
When the local doctor was out of the serum to help battle the disease, the town was facing an epidemic.
It appeared that the town’s population might have been doomed because snow-covered roads made it difficult for the people to travel and find help elsewhere.
The doctor came up with a plan: get the serum with the help of sled dogs.
They only had six days to accomplish the trip, which normally takes 30 days.
Balto was part of the team that would make the second-to-last leg of the journey, and even though he was an untried sled dog, he managed to stay on track through complete darkness and the whiteout of a blizzard.
During the trip, he even saved the whole team from falling into the river at the last second.
Without Balto’s efforts, we don’t know what would have become of the town of Nome.
