International airports across the country have these crews of cuties known as the “Beagle Brigade” to protect America’s borders from incoming contaminants. Things like insects and diseases have a tendency to cling to food from other countries. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize that and occasionally try to bring home an edible souvenir from their vacation.
That’s where these pups step in to give their bags a sniff. With their ultra-heightened sense of smell, which is about 100,000 times more sensitive than humans, they check for any meat, fruit, or plants travelers might have stashed away. The United States Department of Agriculture chose beagles specifically for their keen ability to learn the tricks of the trade as well as their gentle, non-intimidating nature. For the customs department, that means protecting our country from a possible danger; but for the dogs, it’s just a fun game of hide-and-seek! As Officer Rusty Adams shows in the video below, the bond between the officers and dogs is important to a job well done. I was lucky to see this firsthand when my dad worked as one of the officers with his own smart pup partner back in the ’90s. It was the best “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” ever.
