Hippopotamuses are said to be over 55 million years old. They are native to Sub-Saharan Africa, and their name means ‘River Horse’ in Ancient Greek. They are the third-largest land mammal after elephants and white rhinos. Interestingly enough, their closest relations are whales and dolphins. Their diet consists mainly of grass, and the average lifespan is about 45 years. Despite their large size, hippos can easily outrun a human and can be very aggressive, especially when threatened.
