Meet Bijou The Adorable Pint Sized Kitten

Bijou is one of five rescue kittens who were only days old when found. The kittens were abandoned by their mother, and brought to an animal shelter in North Carolina.

Bijou, a very tiny kitten, was one of a litter of five that was brought to an animal shelter in North Carolina.  The kittens were safe, but unable to get the necessary warmth and nutrients they would normally get from their mother.

Co-founder of the National Kitten Coalition, Susan Spaulding, is a frequent foster mom to animals, volunteered to foster the litter of five. She has more than 25 years of experience in fostering kittens, and was more than ready to step up to the plate and take care of the babies ’round the clock.

“I honestly didn’t know what the future held, but I was going to give Bijou and her brothers lots of love and hope for the best,” Susan said. Sadly, one of the kittens passed away shortly after she began fostering them, despite her efforts.

“The remaining three kittens, all boys, progressed normally and moved on to rescue for adoption right on schedule,” Rebecca Jewell, executive director of the National Kitten Coalition in North Carolina, said in an interview. “Bijou progressed much more slowly, and at about 4 ounces, seemed to stop growing. She would gain a few grams, lose a few grams.”

Bijou’s health continued to fluctuate and after a near-death experience,  things were finally starting to look bright for the tiny kitten. Once she was on the mend, she began to slowly gain weight. After a few weeks she was up to 5 ounces and then after nine weeks she was up to 8.2 ounces.

Bijou is now eight months old and weighs 3.3 pounds. She continues to live with Susan, who is nursing the tiny kitten back to health and is expected to make a full recovery.
