Everyone has one of those never worn “ugly, unwanted” sweaters that you haven’t worn for many years. These unwanted sweaters can make a real difference in the life of shelter dogs!
The Washington County Animal Shelter in Tennessee devised a wonderful way to keep its residents cozy and warm over the colder months by giving them little sweaters. It is pretty simple to transform an old sweater into a new cozy dog sweater!
“We have doggy doors that lead to our outdoor cages. Those are left open during the day, which lets the cold air in,” one shelter staffer told The Dodo. So the sweaters keep them warm during these very cold months.
There are about a 100 dogs waiting for adoption at the shelter at any one time, there’s usually a shortage of sweaters to go around.
“We never have enough of the bigger sweaters, so we can use any amount of them,” the staffer said.
There are countless shelters across the country, and particularly those in frigid climates, would likely be thrilled to receive donated cold weather clothing for their pets.
One single sweater can be used to make three separate dog sweaters. Here are some helpful instructions for upcycling sweaters for larger dogs, and instructions for upcycling sweaters for smaller dogs.
